ISKCON 50th Anniversary

In August 1965 at the age of 69 years, with only 40 rupees in his purse, the mandate of his guru, a trunk of devotional books and a heart devoted to Lord Krishna, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami boarded the cargo vessel Jaladuta from a port in Calcutta.

His seemingly improbable aim was to establish a world-wide mission devoted to spreading love of God through the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

In July 1966, now established in a small storefront ashram on the Lower East Side of New York, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami and a small circle of followers and disciples signed a document bringing the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) into being.

In 2015 ISKCON is now a highly recognised and rapidly growing spiritual movement with an outreach which takes in almost every country across the planet. It has many branches, temples, ashrams, schools, stores, restaurants and is currently overseeing one of the world’s largest temple developments in Mayapur, India. For the hundreds of thousands of disciples, followers, friends and well-wishers of this movement, ISKCON lies at the centre of their lives and hearts, forming a sacred connection to each other and in the service of their gurus, Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna.
